Hamas will never stop

Hamas came to power in January 2006.  Before being popularly elected to govern, Hamas engaged in an advertising campaign to let voters know what they would be voting for.  There was a temporary cease-fire, but was never to be long-term.  The Leader of Hamas, in his own words: "As we took Gaza by force, [we should plan] how to forcefully take the rest of the land and [gain] the rest of Palestinian rights..."  See video

Shi'a Bloodletting as Ashura starts

Ashura is a 10 day festival that marks one of the most important days in the Shi'a calendar.   Sunni and Shi'ites differ in who them believe should be the Caliph.  This festival marks the time when Husayn ibn Ali (the grandson of the Muhammad) and 72 companions died on the battlefield in AD 680.  Husayn died in "revolt" against Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan (the second Caliph of the Umayyad dynasty).  Husayn and his followers alleged that Yazid was going against the teachings of Muhammad and changing the sunnah.  After the companions were all killed, their bodies were mutilated.  Not all Shi'a scholars approve of the blood-letting and many claim it violates Islamic law.

Young preachers repackaging Islam

From Boston.com

The Islamic preacher slipped on a pair of shorts and talked about the Koran while playing beach volleyball, eating barbecue, and joking about hot cars and palaces in paradise.   If the West were to dream up its version of an ideal imam, he might look and sound like Mostafa Hosni, a 30-year-old former Nestle accountant who's comfortable in argyle sweaters and hip to self-help. A video of his seaside sermon posted on his website was a cross between a travel brochure and a spiritual quest for the BlackBerry generation.

Islamic Wills in Australia

Shari'a creep is the process where local laws and customs are slowly replaced by Islamic law.  Not all Muslims want this, but a significant number do.  More than 600 Australian Muslims have taken advantage of a law firm's Will Pack that simplifies the complex calculations required to work out inheritances.
