THE people-smuggling trade through Jakarta has become
such big business that spotter’s fees of up to $540 a person are being
offered for getting asylum-seekers on to boats headed for Australia…
The flow of refugees making the perilous crossing to Christmas
Island from points on Java’s southern coastline is also being
accelerated by the fact successful arrivals are immediately telephoning
friends and relatives remaining in Jakarta and nearby, urging
that they follow “while the gates are still open”, one
asylum-seeker told The Australian.
There is widespread acknowledgement among the asylum-seeker
community that the trip to Australia is now as easy as it was in 2001 -
the previous numerical high point in the flow.

From Reuters.com BEIRUT (Reuters) - One of Shi'ite Islam's highest religious
authorities praised Wednesday the "sincerity" of U.S. President Barack
Obama's message to the Muslim world and predicted a positive outcome
for his approach to Iran.
Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah said Obama
appeared to be a man of "human values" but would be judged on his
actions. The ayatollah urged Obama to rethink policy on the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Trying to repair America's damaged image abroad, Obama said on a
visit to predominantly Muslim Turkey this week that the United States
was not at war with Islam.

From Bloomberg.com The Vatican said banks should look at
the rules of Islamic finance to restore confidence amongst their
clients at a time of global economic crisis.
“The ethical principles on which Islamic finance is based
may bring banks closer to their clients and to the true spirit
which should mark every financial service,” the Vatican’s
official newspaper Osservatore Romano said in an article in its
latest issue late yesterday.
Author Loretta Napoleoni and Abaxbank Spa fixed income
strategist, Claudia Segre, say in the article that “Western
banks could use tools such as the Islamic bonds, known as sukuk,
as collateral”.

Even after the attacks by Muslims in Mumbai that caused the deaths of many, the Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee is denying that Islam has anything to do with terrorism. This ignores clear connections with Muhammad and terror. KOLKATA: Observing that Islam does not have any link with terrorism, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said that sometimes religious texts are misinterpreted to commit terrorist activities.
"There is no relation between Islam and terrorism.... In fact, no religion has any place for terror," Mukherjee said.

From International Christian Concern via persecution.org Two Christian girls in Pakistan have finally been rescued after two Muslim men kidnapped them two months ago, raped them repeatedly, forcibly converted them to Islam, and sold them to other men as sex slaves.
Sisters Parvisha, 18, and Sanam, 14, received a call in November 2008 from their neighbor, Muhammad Irfan, offering them training in cosmetology and jobs in his beauty salon. Parvisha, the oldest of seven children, convinced her father, Pastor Sharif Alam, to allow her to take the opportunity so that she could help support their struggling family. Irfan told the girls that he would come to pick them up since they did not know where his shop was.
On November 12, 2008, Irfan picked the girls up with the help of another man, Muhammed Mehboob, drove them 30 minutes away from home and stopped to get drinks. The girls' drinks were heavily drugged and when the sisters came to they found themselves locked in a small hotel room almost 500 miles away from their home in Gujranwala. At gunpoint, the girls were told that if they tried to escape or made any noise they and all of their family would be killed. During the night, each man raped both girls.
The next day the men drove the sisters to Karachi where they stayed at Mehboob's brother-in-law's house. There they repeatedly raped both girls over several days and then took them to an Islamic religious school where they forced them to convert to Islam. Parvisha and Sanam were given Muslim names and told that if they cooperated they would be released soon.
